File mime type checker displays file information reported by your browser, including the MIME type. Use it to inspect the type label, file name, size, and modification information when troubleshooting an upload or a file selection.

How to use File mime type checker

  1. Select the file using the file field.
  2. Read the displayed MIME type and file details.
  3. Compare the reported label with the requirements of the destination application.

Example and interpretation

A selected PNG may be reported as image/png. If an application expects that type but receives a different or empty label, investigate the file and its handling before simply changing its extension.

Compare the file name, reported type, and size as separate pieces of metadata. If they disagree, inspect the actual format with an appropriate file analysis workflow. A familiar extension or MIME label alone does not establish what the file contains.

Limits to consider

The installed form reads the browser’s file metadata. It does not deeply inspect the binary signature, scan for malware, or establish that the contents match the extension. Browser type labels can be empty or inferred from file naming.

Questions about File mime type checker

Is the displayed MIME type a security verdict?

No. A type label is not a malware scan or proof of valid contents.

Does changing an extension convert the file?

No. Renaming a file does not change its underlying data format.
